The biggest surprises in the Golden Globe nominations

Every time the Golden Globe nominations are announced, the press is abuzz because many notable films and faces are overlooked by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

This year was no exception when Interstellar, the blockbuster science fiction film about conquering the universe by director Christopher Nolan, was almost empty-handed and was only nominated in the category of Best Original Score.

Surprisingly, Angelina Jolie's highly anticipated film Unbroken was also not nominated in any category, despite its high praise. Here are some of the most surprising omissions or nominations from the 2015 Golden Globe nominations.

1. Unbroken:A week ago, Angelina Jolie's film Unbroken was still considered a strong candidate for the 2015 awards season. The film is an inspirational story about a real-life character, Olympic athlete Louis "Louie" Zamperini, who was a prisoner of war during World War II.

However, after the Golden Globe nominations were announced on December 11, Unbroken was not nominated for Best Drama Film and Jolie was not nominated for Best Director.

This is a big surprise because Jolie has always received high praise from the HFPA. She has been nominated for the Golden Globes seven times, including Best Foreign Language Film for In The Land Of Blood And Honey. She was even nominated for The Tourist, which was considered a “bad movie”. This year, Fury, a war drama starring Jolie’s husband Brad Pitt, was also eliminated from the race.

Christopher Nolan's Interstellar was snubbed from the 2015 Golden Globes

2. Timothy Spall:Veteran British actor Timothy Spall won Best Actor at this year's Cannes Film Festival and later the New York Critics Circle Award for his portrayal of renowned landscape painter JMW Turner in the biopic Mr. Turner. However, the acclaimed film was overlooked by the HFPA and Spall was not nominated for Best Actor.

3. Marion Cotillard:Cotillard is one of the most admired actresses in the world. She was considered a strong contender this season for her roles in Two Days, One Night and The Immigrant. However, neither of her roles were nominated.

4. Interstellar:As one of the most popular and resounding films of the year, director Christopher Nolan's Interstellar did not attract the attention of members of the HFPA. The film was only nominated for the Best Original Score category, for the music by Hans Zimmer.

Previously, many people still thought that Interstellar would be nominated in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Matthew McConaughey.

5. Quvenzhane Wallis:Wallis was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress at the age of nine for her role in Beasts Of The Southern Wild. Now she is up for a Golden Globe for Best Actress for Annie, where she will be competing with heavyweights like Julianne Moore, Helen Mirren, Amy Adams and Emily Blunt.

6. Pride:Matthew Warchus's Pride, about gay activists supporting miners during a long strike in the 1980s, has won rave reviews but has not done well at this year's awards. However, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has nominated it for Best Motion Picture/Musical/Comedy.
