(Baonghean.vn) - Every year, about 40,000 people die from tobacco-related diseases and it is predicted that by 2030, this number will increase to 70,000 deaths per year if measures to prevent and combat the harmful effects of tobacco are not effective.

Cigarette smoke contains up to 7,000 chemicals, of which 69 are carcinogenic, including addictive substances and toxic substances such as nicotine, tar, CO2, benzene...

Tobacco kills half of all regular smokers; on average, one person dies from tobacco every six seconds; 8 million people die each year, of which 1 million are passive smokers. Every year, 165,000 children die before the age of 5 due to respiratory infections caused by passive smoking.

Smoking causes more than 70% of lung cancer deaths globally, and up to 97% in Vietnam. The number of people who die from smoking is greater than the total number of people who die from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. It is estimated that smoking reduces life expectancy by 12 years; on average, 1 in 3 smokers die prematurely.

Every year, cigarettes release 84 million tons of CO2 waste into the atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect and global climate change; 4.5 billion cigarette butts (equivalent to 766,571 tons) are released into the environment; cigarette butts account for 3-4% of coastal and urban waste after cleaning.

Every year, an estimated 600 million trees are cut down; 200 thousand (2%) hectares of forests worldwide are destroyed for wood to dry tobacco, make cigarette paper and cigarette packaging; 22 billion tons of water are used to produce and process tobacco.

The tobacco industry produces 6.5 trillion cigarettes each year and sells them worldwide (China, India, and Brazil are the three main tobacco producing countries). According to a recent study by the World Health Organization, the number of girls smoking is on the rise.

Cost of tobacco: $1.7 trillion (VND40 trillion)/year is the amount of money spent on treating tobacco-related diseases globally.

In Vietnam, smoking can cause nearly 97% of lung cancer cases; 75% of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease cases (COPD, asthma, bronchitis); 25% of cardiovascular disease cases (blood pressure, arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, stroke); cancers...

The toxic substances in cigarette smoke also cause many other diseases such as: hair loss, cataracts, gingivitis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, impotence, premature birth, miscarriage, embolism of the limbs... It can be said that, from head to toe, there is no place that is not affected by the toxic substances in cigarette smoke.
