(Baonghean.vn) - In 2022, the highlight of Nghe An's grassroots sports is the success in organizing the 9th District and Provincial Sports Festival. In addition, the province's high-performance athletes also achieved impressive results in domestic and international tournaments.

Exciting Provincial Sports Festival

2022 marks the exciting return of grassroots tournaments organized by localities and sectors of Nghe An province after a long period of delay or interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Among them, the largest tournament isThe 9th Provincial Sports Congress.

Held every four years, the Sports Congress at all levels from the grassroots to the provincial level is an opportunity to evaluate the sports training work at all levels and sectors in the whole province; at the same time, promote the campaign "All people exercise following the example of great Uncle Ho". However, due to the complicated developments of the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2021, the Sports Congress at the commune and district levels (collectively referred to as the grassroots level) towards the 9th Nghe An Provincial Sports Congress in 2022 was delayed and disrupted.

After the epidemic was basically controlled, in order to ensure time for the organization of the Provincial Sports Congress, the Nghe An Sports Department issued flexible regulations, conducting parallel activities between the organization of the events in the congress program and the organization of the grassroots sports congress. Thanks to that, the provincial congress was completed on schedule, ensuring the professional requirements as well as the core meaning that the congress brings.

The opening ceremony on the evening of August 13 at Vinh Stadium with nearly 10,000 participants, along with the art performance program with the theme: "Promoting tradition - Uniting to build a rich and beautiful Nghe An" left many impressions, clearly demonstrating the cultural features, socio-economic conditions, strengths of sports and people of Nghe An.

This is expected to be the driving force for the sports movement in other mountainous areas to overcome difficulties and make progress and breakthroughs in the coming time.

High performance sports impression

In 2020 and 2021, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the failure to participate in major national tournaments as planned affected Nghe An's sports achievements. However, coaches and athletes of the province's high-performance sports all made efforts to practice and maintain their physical strength.

In 2022, when the epidemic situation was under control, Nghe An sports teams actively participated in tournaments and basically fulfilled the set targets. Accordingly, Nghe An athletes won 364 medals at domestic and international tournaments (104 Gold Medals, 101 Silver Medals and 159 Bronze Medals).

Of the 364 medals won by high-performance athletes in 2022, 8 were won at world championships, 3 at continental championships, 8 at Southeast Asian championships, 56 at National Games and 19 at national championships.

Among these, the most special are the 2 Gold Medals at the 2022 World Cup Diving (held in early September 2022) of athlete Nguyen Trong Dung in the 200m fins and 4 x 100 fins relay events. These are the Gold Medals won by a Nghe An diver at a world-level tournament.

Another notable achievement of Nghe An high-performance sports in 2022 belongs to female weightlifter Pham Thi Hong Thanh when she won 3 Gold Medals at the Asian Weightlifting Championship held in Bahrain in the women's 64 kg weight class, including the following events: Snatch, Clean and Jerk, and Total.

The excellence of Trong Dung, Hong Thanh, along with the stability of the "golden hopes" such as Nguyen Thi Quyen, Nguyen Thi My (soccer), Nguyen Thi Mai (kickboxing), Le Cong Tai (soccer), Nguyen Kim Bao (traditional wrestling)... helped the Nghe An sports delegation win 13 Gold Medals, 15 Silver Medals, 28 Bronze Medals, ranking 18/65 of the entire delegation.

Although the target set before the Congress was not met (winning 15-17 Gold Medals, 10-12 Silver Medals, 20-25 Bronze Medals, ranking 17-15 overall), compared to the previous Sports Congress, the achievements of the Nghe An Sports Delegation have improved significantly (at the 8th National Sports Congress in 2018, the Nghe An Sports Delegation won 8 Gold Medals, 9 Silver Medals and 21 Bronze Medals, ranking 19/65 provincial, municipal and industry sports delegations nationwide).

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports said: "Before the 9th National Sports Congress, the preparation work of Nghe An sports encountered some difficulties such as the Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center was constructing and renovating some facilities; some sports at the Congress had limited competition registration content; some sports had difficulties in training funding, hiring domestic and foreign experts... However, the efforts of the athletes to practice and aim for the highest goals are very commendable".

In the coming period, Nghe An high-performance sports will make more efforts and determination to successfully complete the set goals and tasks; contribute to promoting the comprehensive development of Nghe An sports in particular and contribute to the overall development of the country's sports in the future.
