Subjects exempted from exams and extra points in national exams

According to the new regulations just announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, in this year's national high school exam, some subjects will be exempted from the exam, considered for special graduation, and given priority and incentive points.

Many subjects are exempted from the exam.

This year, candidates exempted from the foreign language exam are members of the national team participating in the International Foreign Language Olympiad; candidates with one of the certificates as prescribed by the Ministry. Candidates exempted from the foreign language exam will be given 10 points for this subject to be considered for graduation recognition.

Candidates exempted from all four exams in the high school graduation exam are those with extremely severe disabilities and those with severe disabilities; resistance fighters infected with toxic chemicals with a labor capacity reduction of 61% or more; children of resistance fighters infected with toxic chemicals with a labor capacity reduction of 61% or more.

Candidates exempted from all subjects are those who have participated in the national team selection exam for international or regional Olympic competitions in cultural subjects. In addition, those who are on teams participating in international or regional Olympic competitions in science and technology, sports, culture and arts are also exempted from the exam.

This year, the Ministry of Education and Training will consider special high school graduation for candidates who unfortunately have an accident, fall ill or have a special emergency no more than 10 days before the exam date or during the first exam session; candidates who cannot take the exam or have taken at least one subject and cannot continue taking the exam or after an accident, fall ill or have a special emergency voluntarily take the remaining subjects. However, these candidates must meet the requirements on academic performance, conduct and must have a hospital admission and discharge record issued by a hospital at the district level or higher or a confirmation from the People's Committee of the commune where they reside.

Bonus points, incentives

For this year's exam, the Ministry of Education and Training has set different priority levels with different incentive points ranging from 0.25 points to 2 points depending on the subject to ensure fairness for candidates. Candidates with multiple priority criteria will only be entitled to the highest priority criteria. Special cases will be considered and decided by the Minister of Education and Training.

Candidates who are given 0.25 points include children of war invalids, sick soldiers, people who enjoy policies like war invalids, sick soldiers with reduced working capacity of less than 81%; heroes of the people's armed forces, heroes of labor; children of heroic Vietnamese mothers; children of heroes of the people's armed forces, heroes of labor; ethnic minorities; Kinh people, foreigners residing in Vietnam with permanent residence in extremely difficult areas, border areas, islands, ethnic minority and mountainous areas, studying at general schools not located in inner-city districts of centrally-run cities for at least 2/3 of the time studying at high school level.

People infected with Agent Orange; children of people infected with Agent Orange; children of resistance fighters infected with toxic chemicals; people recognized by competent authorities as having deformities, disabilities, or reduced ability to self-reliant in daily life or work due to the consequences of toxic chemicals are also eligible for an additional 0.25 points.

For continuing education, the beneficiaries of this priority level are war invalids, sick soldiers, people enjoying policies like war invalids and sick soldiers with a reduced working capacity of less than 81%; children of revolutionary activists before the 1945 General Uprising; people aged 35 and over.

Candidates who are given 0.5 points include ethnic minorities with permanent residence in extremely difficult areas, border areas, coastal areas and islands, ethnic minority and mountainous areas, studying at ethnic boarding schools or general schools not located in inner-city districts of centrally-run cities; war invalids, sick soldiers, people enjoying policies like war invalids, sick soldiers with a working capacity reduction of 81% or more (for continuing education); children of martyrs; children of war invalids, sick soldiers, people enjoying policies like war invalids, sick soldiers with a working capacity reduction of 81% or more.

Students participating in the following competitions and activities will be awarded 1-2 points in order to be considered for high school graduation recognition: candidates who win individual prizes in the examination for excellent students in cultural subjects of grade 12; candidates who win individual and team prizes in practical experiments in Physics, Chemistry, Biology; art competitions; physical education and sports; national defense education sports; science and technology competitions; international letter writing organized by the education sector in coordination with specialized sectors from the provincial level and above. For team prizes, candidates will only be awarded if it is a national prize.

Students with conduct classification who have vocational certificates issued by the Department of Education and Training or vocational training institutions will be awarded bonus points based on the classification stated in the certificate. Candidates with foreign language or computer certificates will be awarded 1 point for each type of certificate.
