Architectural Digest on November 1 published exclusive photos, giving the public a glimpse into the private area on the second floor of the White House, where the Obama family and dogs Bo and Sunny called home for nearly 8 years of their term.

Interior designer Michael Smith decorated the rooms as well as the Oval Office. A mutual friend introduced Smith to Mr. Obama after the 2008 election.

First Lady Michelle let Smith design based on the family's preferences while still respecting the history of the White House.

The photos show the yellow Oval Office, the Treaty Room where Mr. Obama often stays late to read briefing papers for the next day, a living room, a dining room, and the master bedroom. All are decorated with modern and contemporary art borrowed from major galleries such as the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian.

Architecture Digest also published photos of the private living quarters of Presidents John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush.

Editor-in-Chief Amy Astley said the Obamas' personal style, history and the nation's diversity are reflected in their art and decor choices.

Decorated in beige, the bedrooms feature an antique canopy bed and elegant Italian linens. Matching tables are placed next to the bed, one of which holds family photos and a stack of books. Leather chairs and sofas combine to create a sitting area for conversation.

Smith calls the bedroom the Obamas' “sanctuary”: “You really want to make sure the president of the United States gets a good night's sleep.”

On ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," President Obama shared: "I have a phone right next to my bed and every morning someone will call and say, 'Mr. President, it's 7 o'clock, time to wake up.'"

Photos of Mr. Obama's residence are expected to be released on newsstands on election day, November 8.
