Dr. Kevin Mattingly, Academic Director of Riverdale School (New York, USA), helps parents relieve their concerns by applying methods that can help their children learn effectively without wasting time.

“Scientific research has shown that most students, including graduate students, do not know how to study well. Many times, students spend a lot of time studying but do not achieve good results. They are tired, lack sleep and do not study effectively. Therefore, learning how to study is the most important skill in life,” said Mr. Kevin.

The misconceptions of learning

Many parents always want their children to be obedient and successful in their studies.

But according to Dr. Kevin, children have to struggle and make mistakes in order to learn. When children do not have too much difficulty learning and do not make mistakes, they do not learn much.

It is a habit of people to write down hints about what others are saying or underline lines they like while reading.

“After school or before a test, students will open the notebooks they have taken notes in, the books they have marked, and read.

I think you shouldn’t do that. The more effective way is to close your books before going to class and sit down to recall what you have learned and what you have written down. At that time, your brain is active. It is often very difficult because a day later we will forget the knowledge we have learned.

But when you try to remember like that, you are exercising your brain and your memory is trained better," shared a lecturer at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Kevin Mattingly is sharing about misconceptions about learning.

Effective learning strategies

To have an effective learning strategy, Mr. Kevin pointed out 7 methods: practice remembering what you learn, study a little every day, manage time, think about your thoughts, learn to ask good questions, participate in class discussions and meet with teachers.

With the method of learning how to ask good questions, Mr. Kevin gives an example of students doing homework. In such a case, good questions should be asked in mind such as: “What knowledge is related to today’s lesson?”, “Why do I have to do this?”, “Is this environment suitable?”, after finishing the lesson, think about what you have done.

The academic director of Riverdale High School said that schools in the US all apply the round table discussion method. This method is not easy for many students because when students sit like this, teachers mostly require students to ask questions and contribute opinions. It is very difficult for international students to adapt to this learning environment. Students should prepare some questions related to the discussion topic in advance and raise their hands first because if they ask first, no one will ask.

In addition, he also shared that lecturers love to talk with students, but the general mentality of students, especially international students, is to be afraid to meet teachers. According to this doctor, students should eliminate the feeling of bothering teachers because teachers love to meet students who are eager to learn.

Dr. Kevin Mattingly of Education concluded that when young people want to succeed in the academic field, hard work is not enough, but they must work effectively. The secret to completing any work is in "effectiveness". The effectiveness behind your efforts is what is important. Work performance depends largely on the effectiveness of efforts, not on any special ability.
