Traffic violations that Vietnamese people are easily fined during Tet

Drinking alcohol and driving, carrying too many people, or stopping or parking illegally... are common traffic violations every Tet holiday.

During the Lunar New Year holiday, traffic volume increases dramatically due to the increased need for travel and visits. The chaos can lead to violations by drivers of cars and motorbikes. Below are common violations, with corresponding fines stipulated in Decree 46/2016.

During Tet, drivers and traffic participants should be careful to avoid making the following mistakes:

1. People sitting in a car not wearing a seat belt in a position equipped with a seat belt while the car is moving: fine of 100,000-200,000 VND.

2. Carrying more people than the prescribed number: fine 300,000-400,000 VND.

3. Using a mobile phone while driving on the road: fine of 600,000-800,000 VND.

4. Stopping, parking, or turning the vehicle in violation of regulations causing traffic congestion: fine of 800,000-1,200,000 VND.

5. When parking a vehicle occupying part of the roadway without placing a hazard warning sign as prescribed: fine of 100,000-200,000 VND.

6. Changing lanes in an unauthorized place or without signaling: fine of 300,000-400,000 VND.

7. Reversing on a one-way street or a street with a "No Entry" sign: fine of 300,000-400,000 VND.

8. Driving at a speed exceeding the prescribed speed:

- From 5 to under 10 km/h: car 600,000-800,000 VND, motorbike 100,000-200,000 VND.

- From 10 to 20 km/h: car 2-3 million VND, motorbike 500,000-1,000,000 VND.

- From 20 to 35 km/h: 5-6 million VND, motorbike 3-4 million.

- Over 35 km/h: 7-8 million VND, motorbike 3-4 million.

9. Failure to comply with traffic light signals: fine of 1,200,000-2,000,000 VND.

In addition, there are specific penalties for drivers with alcohol breath concentration:

- A fine of 2-3 million VND will be imposed on drivers whose blood or breath alcohol concentration does not exceed 50 milligrams/100 milliliters of blood or 0.25 milligrams/1 liter of breath. In addition, violators will have their driving license revoked for 1-3 months.

- Fine of 7-8 million VND for drivers on the road with blood or breath alcohol concentration exceeding 50 milligrams to 80 milligrams/100 milliliters of blood or exceeding 0.25 milligrams to 0.4 milligrams/1 liter of breath. Suspension of driving license for 3-5 months.

- A fine of 16-18 million VND shall be imposed on drivers whose blood or breath alcohol concentration exceeds 80 milligrams/100 milliliters of blood or exceeds 0.4 milligrams/1 liter of breath; or who fail to comply with the request of an officer on duty to check their alcohol concentration. Driver's license shall be revoked for 4-6 months.

For motorcyclists, the levelPenalties for alcohol violations are as follows:

- Fine of 1-2 million VND for drivers and passengers of motorbikes, mopeds (including electric motorbikes), motorbike-like vehicles and moped-like vehicles on the road whose blood or breath alcohol concentration exceeds 50 milligrams to 80 milligrams/100 milliliters of blood or exceeds 0.25 milligrams to 0.4 milligrams/1 liter of breath. Suspension of driving license for 1-3 months.

- A fine of 3-4 million VND shall be imposed on drivers who do not comply with the request of law enforcement officers to check for drugs or alcohol levels; or who drive on the road with a blood or breath alcohol level exceeding 80 milligrams/100 milliliters of blood or exceeding 0.4 milligrams/1 liter of breath. In addition to the fine, the violating driver will also have his/her driving license revoked for 3-5 months.

In addition, drivers and passengers of two-wheeled motorbikes, three-wheeled motorbikes, and motorbikes who commit the common mistake of not wearing a helmet, or wearing a helmet but not fastening the strap properly, will be fined 100,000-200,000 VND.
