The Thirsty Villages
It is only the beginning of summer, but many villages in Nghe An are already suffering from drought and lack of water for daily use. Many places have to use polluted water sources. In addition, hundreds of water plants in the province are operating inefficiently or are abandoned. Meanwhile, the meteorological agency predicts that this year's temperature will be higher than the average of many years, and the drought situation will become worse in the coming time.
Part 1: Water shortage from lowland to highland
For many years now, from the mountainous districts of western Nghe An to the coastal villages, the shortage of domestic water in the summer has been very severe. The “thirst” has been clinging to every family and village without any effective solution.
Record drought in 40 years
Since early morning, Mr. Lang Van Tinh (Ke Sung village, Mau Duc commune, Con Cuong) had to carry 2 plastic cans through the forest to find water for daily use. In Ke Sung village, almost all containers that can be used to store water have been used by the people. For more than a month now, since the rains have gradually become less frequent and instead have been pouring down like fire, the people here have also been parched due to lack of water for daily use.
“My family has two deep wells, but during the hot season, there is no water. Water for drinking, bathing and washing in the house must be taken from streams. In the past 2-3 years, during the dry season, the water source from streams is also very low, not enough to meet the daily needs of the family and the people in the village. To have water, we have to go to the source of the streams and dig deep holes to get water,” said Mr. Tinh. Mau Duc commune has 8 villages, 3 of which are facing a serious shortage of water for daily use.
Mr. Vi Van Vuong - Vice Chairman of Mau Duc Commune People's Committee said that the lack of domestic water has caused many difficulties for people's lives, leading to environmental pollution and a high risk of disease outbreaks. Although the local government has tried, there is still no solution to resolve the problem.
Similar to Ke Sung, Khe Ngau village in Xa Luong commune, Tuong Duong district has also been without water for many days. In previous years, 153 households in Khe Ngau village shared the water system with Ang village and Lo village, Xa Luong commune, invested by the State. This year, the weather is dry, Khe Ngau village is located at the end of the source, so the water has run out before it reaches the destination, the tanks have been bare for the past 2 months, causing many difficulties for the villagers.
Mr. Luong Van Pan, Khe Ngau village, said that the tap water system is exhausted, some households invested in digging wells but it was not effective. Because the lime water is abundant and has a bad smell. Some households did not dig wells and had to use river water, which is not hygienic... According to the elderly, for more than 40 years, Khe Ngau has never suffered from drought to the extent it is now.
Not only Xa Luong commune, according to the reporter's records, many villages in Tuong Duong are thirsty even though summer has just begun. The lack of domestic water is occurring in villages along National Highway 7 such as Bai So, Lang Mo (Tam Quang); Mac, Lau, Nhan, Chan (Thach Giam town); to the inner communes such as Luong Minh, Yen Hoa, Yen Na, Yen Tinh, Xieng My, Yen Thang, Nga My. Mr. Lo Kham Kha - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tuong Duong district said that the weather is increasingly unusual, the risk of drought is present in some areas that have never lacked water before such as Tam Quang, Nga My, Xieng My.
