The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association on June 26, analyzed the health records of more than 13,000 healthy college graduates in the United States, with an average age of 37, and 60% of them women.
After a period of monitoring, scientists from the Department of Public Health at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, concluded that people who have the habit of watching TV more than three hours a day have twice the risk of early death compared to those who spend only one hour or less sitting in front of the TV screen.
However, research confirms that watching too much TV is not the direct cause of premature deaths, but that this sedentary lifestyle makes people susceptible to high blood pressure, obesity, cancer and cardiovascular diseases, which are causes of premature death.
Of the 97 premature deaths, cancer was the leading cause of death with 46 deaths, cardiovascular problems caused 19 deaths, while 31 premature deaths were due to other diseases.
In addition to time spent watching TV, researchers have also looked at the relationship between the amount of time spent working on a computer or driving and the risk of early death. However, scientists have not yet found any link.
With this conclusion, scientists recommend that adults should increase physical activities, avoid sitting for too long, and keep TV viewing time to a maximum of one to two hours.
According to the American Heart Association, the average person should spend two hours a week doing light exercise./.
