Sunlight through sad eyes, drunken butterfly heart

The road is lit up all year round by the sun..."
White Summerwas written by Trinh Cong Son in 1961, after a strange dream in the blazing, scorching sun of a summer noon in Hue. From that summer noon dream, the poem about a beautiful woman in white walking in a cloudless afternoon began to take shape. A week later, the musician witnessed the story of a life-and-death love between the parents of a friend. These two events evoked many haunting and tormenting feelings in the talented artist's soul.
"Then, I combined the dream of white summer flowers with this old love that is as strong as an old shirt, even though it's wrinkled, I still want to call each other's names forever to write the song.White Summer", Trinh Cong Son wrote in his memoirs.
"Sea of memories"
"I'm leaving tomorrow.
The sea remembers your name calling back
The mist drenches the dream
The high sky holds Son Khe's steps..."
Trinh Cong Son composed Bien nho in the summer of 1962. According to many hypotheses, the song was dedicated to a young woman named Ton Nu Bich Khe. Therefore, the phrase "Son Khe" (generally meaning mountains and rivers) is capitalized to create a special meaning for Trinh Cong Son and Bich Khe.
Ngo Quang Canh - a classmate of Trinh Cong Son at Quy Nhon Pedagogical School - once told the story of Sea of Memories: "At that time, I was very young (19 years old) and Mr. Son was (23 years old). I don't know how many nights Mr. Son spent pondering on Quy Nhon beach to remember that person, that elegant and noble Miss Ton Nu, to finally crystallize intoSea of memories,a famous love song for nearly half a century".
"A place to go back to"
"How many years have passed and you are still gone
Wandering around makes life tiring
On our shoulders are the sun and the moon
Shining through a hundred years of a world of coming and going..."
A place to go back tocarries a profound philosophy of life, conveyed through subtle metaphorical lyrics. During his lifetime, the musician admitted that he could not accurately explain this song.
"This is a very strange song, it's really not easy to understand because there are sentences in the song that I myself find difficult to explain. It's written like that, but to explain it clearly is difficult. When I meet many people who, although they have little education, like it. When I ask them if they understand, they answer that they don't understand but feel something inside. When listening, when singing, there is something that touches my heart. I think in art, the most important thing is how to open the shortest path from the heart to the heart of others without having to explain anything more," Trinh Cong Son once said.
