Photos shared on social media showed several train carriages overturned and grey smoke billowing into the air at the scene of the derailment in the Bryansk region.
Russian Railways said the incident happened at 10:17 Moscow time (16:16 Hanoi time). The company said the locomotive and seven freight cars derailed and the locomotive caught fire.
“An unidentified explosive device exploded at the 136km milestone on the Bryansk-Unecha railway line, derailing a freight train,” Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz said in a post on his Telegram channel.
Russian authorities say the region, which borders both Ukraine and Belarus, has seen several attacks by pro-Ukrainian sabotage groups in the 14 months since Russia launched its military campaign in Ukraine. On April 29, the governor said four people were killed after Kiev shelled a village in the border area.
The incident site, according to the local governor, is about 60km north of the Russia-Ukraine border, but he did not say who was responsible for the attack.
In another development, the governor of Russia's Leningrad region near St Petersburg said a power line was blown up overnight and an explosive device had been found near another power line.
Governor Alexander Drozdenko posted photos of the damaged power lines and metal supports on his personal Telegram account on the morning of May 1. He said Russia’s FSB federal security service was investigating the scene, but did not reveal his guess as to who was responsible.
