In Dien Chau, continuous heavy rains flooded nearly 1,000 hectares of various crops, mainly corn on fertile soil with nearly 600 hectares; 200 hectares of peanuts; in particular, nearly 30 hectares of cucumbers planted for the first time in Dien Lam, Dien Cat, Dien An communes... in the form of cooperation with enterprises were flooded and almost completely lost.

Mr. Phan Xuan Vinh, Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee, said: "The lost corn area is mainly located along the coastal communes, with a lot of tea, from 7-8 leaves to the cob, due to prolonged deep flooding, it is expected that when the sun comes up, it will wilt and die, after the rain, it will have to be destroyed and switched to growing vegetables; the cucumber areas with minor damage will wait for the sun to rise to focus on care, fill in the eroded root soil, and mix Lam Thao phosphate to water the roots to restore the roots. As for peanuts, because they are in the flowering stage, preparing to set fruit, the damage will not be significant. However, it will greatly affect crop yields."

According to statistics, Nghi Loc district currently has nearly 190 hectares of flooded peanuts and 350 hectares of flooded vegetables; mainly concentrated in low-lying communes such as Nghi Long, Nghi Thuan, Nghi Trung, Nghi Thach, Nghi Truong, Nghi Xa, Nghi Phong... Most of Nghi Loc's low-lying communes have been flooded and isolated due to floods.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Quang, Head of the Department of Agriculture of Nghi Loc district, the most serious damage was 160 hectares of shrimp ready for harvest in Nghi Hop, Nghi Thai, Nghi Quang communes... which were completely flooded. "In addition, 500 hectares of vegetables were almost completely lost; the whole district had only planted 1,000 hectares of corn, of which 700 hectares were damaged by over 70%.

"Nghi Loc's drainage currently depends on the output of the Cam River. In the immediate future, the district has directed localities to focus on clearing sewers, waiting for water to drain to replant vegetables, and taking care of lightly damaged peanut areas to get seeds for the spring crop next year; as for the lost corn area, because the season is over, when the sun comes up, it will be switched to growing other short-term crops," said Mr. Nguyen Van Quang.

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Hoang Nghia Hieu said: The weather is still unpredictable, the two top priorities now are protecting the safety of dams and taking care of winter crops.

Localities and relevant units focus on draining water in Ben Thuy, Nghi Quang and Dien Thanh bara, taking advantage of low tide to open all drainage sluices to limit flooding of winter crops. At the same time, focus on draining winter crops, after the water recedes, take care of them using technical measures according to the instructions of technical staff.

For crops that are no longer seasonal, research on switching to short-term crops such as various vegetables.
