Efforts to overcome damage caused by tornado and hail in Ky Son
(Baonghean) -Recently, due to unusual climate changes, extreme weather phenomena such as tornadoes and hail have continuously occurred in Ky Son, causing serious damage to crops, property and even people's lives.
On March 29, 2013, in Chieu Luu commune, a tornado accompanied by hail tore off roofs and damaged 28 houses, of which Luu Thang village suffered the most damage with 24 houses severely damaged. According to local people, this was the first time they had seen hail falling with such density and size, with some hailstones as big as duck eggs. The tornado accompanied by hail destroyed property and houses, and a large area of rice and crops of local people was severely damaged.
On the same day, in Bao Nam commune, a tornado accompanied by heavy rain collapsed two houses, blew off the roofs and severely damaged 12 other houses, including two dormitories for teachers of the Ethnic Minority Boarding High School and a kindergarten.
Then, on April 2, at around 4 p.m., in Nam Can commune, Ky Son district, heavy rain and a tornado of very strong intensity continued to occur. Although it only lasted for more than 15 minutes, it caused serious damage, killing one person, injuring one, completely collapsing two houses and blowing off the roofs of 18 other houses. The estimated damage was up to hundreds of millions of dong. The person who died was Mr. Lau Chu Ka, residing in Nam Khien village, Nam Can commune. According to local people, at the time of the tornado, he and his wife went to cut grass for their cows. On the way home, the tornado struck, causing an old tree to fall on them, killing Mr. Ka on the spot. His wife was injured in the head but luckily received timely first aid and is now in stable health. In Ky Son district, tornadoes occur every year, but according to eyewitnesses, this was the biggest tornado that caused the most damage to people.
The tornado caused trees to fall and collapsed houses in Nam Can village, Nam Can commune.
Immediately after receiving news of tornadoes and hail in the above communes, the Ky Son Storm and Flood Prevention Steering Committee sent working groups to the area to inspect and count the damage. They directed the commune government, border guards, and military to help people overcome the consequences. The working group also visited the homes of the families that suffered damage and those whose members died in the recent tornado. The district quickly mobilized local forces to join hands with the affected people to clean up and repair their houses. In particular, they focused on quickly overcoming the damage at two schools to ensure the lives of teachers and students did not affect the progress of teaching and learning.
Mr. Mua No Xu - Vice Chairman, Deputy Standing Committee of Storm and Flood Prevention of Ky Son district said: In the immediate future, Ky Son district will support the families of the deceased with 5 million VND, the injured with 1 million VND, the collapsed houses with 7 million VND, and the houses with blown-off roofs will be supported by the district with roofing materials to help people overcome difficulties and soon stabilize their lives.
Ky Son is one of the most difficult mountainous districts in the country, but every year the district has to endure extreme weather phenomena such as tornadoes, hail, flash floods... causing great damage to people's lives and property. In order to minimize the negative impacts of natural disasters, first of all, every person must raise their vigilance and be ready to respond when bad situations occur. In addition, the District Flood and Storm Prevention Committee also needs to be more active in disseminating information to people about unusual weather phenomena, as well as ways to prevent and minimize damage.
