French media quoted police sources as saying that hours after the attack, special forces were still hunting for the perpetrator. A gunfight broke out between the two sides. The suspect is currently holed up in a shop on Epinal Street.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, but anti-terrorism prosecutors have opened an investigation. French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said the attacker was known to security services, while local authorities said he was on a watch list of intelligence agencies.
The suspect is 29 years old, according to reports. His home was raided by police earlier that day in connection with a robbery that occurred in the summer. He was not home at the time.
People present in the Neudorf area and Etoile Park Strasbourg have been asked by authorities not to leave their safe locations.
The European Parliament, currently in regular plenary session, was also forced to close, leaving many lawmakers and reporters unable to leave the building.
