(Baonghean.vn) - Receiving university results with the title of second place winner with 28 points (rounded), but that joy for the family of Nguyen Van Hoang (Hamlet 8, Trung Son, Do Luong) was "short-lived" when the worry about university expenses weighed heavily on the parents' shoulders...

These days, in the level 4 house in Hamlet 8, Trung Son (Do Luong) of Mr. Nguyen Van Truc, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga is bustling with people coming in and out to congratulate the runner-up from a poor hometown. The title of runner-up of Hanoi University of Science and Technology with a score of 28 (Math 10, Physics 9.25 and Chemistry 8.5) is not surprising to Hoang as well as his friends, teachers and family, because his learning ability is very good.

Nguyen Van Hoang and the Gold Medal of Violimpic Mathematics in Grade 9

Born in 1994 in a poor farming family. His parents worked hard in the fields and gardens, doing all kinds of jobs to support his two siblings' education, so Hoang was very studious and hard-working. From grade 1 to grade 9, Hoang was an excellent student at school, his math score was never lower than 9. He won third prize in the provincial math competition in grade 5, second prize in the district in grade 8 and first prize in the provincial math competition in grade 9. His family was poor and did not have money to buy a computer to study, but Hoang was very passionate about solving math problems online. In grade 9, Hoang participated in the national Violimpic Math final round organized by the Ministry of Education and won a Gold Medal with a perfect score of 290/290 points.

In grade 10, with the top 10 students with high entrance scores of Do Luong I High School, Hoang was admitted to the specialized Math 10T class, becoming the "seed" of the school in the excellent student competitions. Not disappointing the expectations of teachers, Hoang continuously proved his ability with awards: Top scorer of the Provincial Physics Olympiad; second prize for excellent students in the province in Math and third prize for excellent students in the province in Physics. His total score in 3 specialized subjects was admirable: Math 9.9; Physics: 9.8; Chemistry: 9.5. In particular, Hoang actively participated in solving problems in the magazines Youth Mathematics and Youth Physics and won high prizes.

In this year's university entrance exam, Hoang passed two schools: Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications (Hanoi University of Science and Technology) and Military Medical Academy. His dream is to become a good electronics and telecommunications engineer, but that dream is facing the "risk" of collapse because Hoang's family is too poor, his parents cannot afford to pay for Hoang's education. Hoang's mother - Nguyen Thi Nga, has heart valve disease, coronary artery disease, chronic pneumonia, and overwork, so in the past two years, her health has seriously declined, she can only do small chores around the house, many times she was in critical condition and had to be transferred to the hospital but had no money so she had to take medicine to survive. Hoang's father, Nguyen Van Truc, worked day and night with 7 fields of rice, worked as a porter, doing whatever anyone borrowed as long as she had money to pay for her two children's education and medicine for his sick wife. “The day Hoang took the exam, his mother had just been discharged from the hospital. She had no money so she had to sell the computer that Hoang’s uncle had bought for him when he won the Gold Prize in an online math competition to get money for the exam. Seeing my son lingering and regretting the computer that he had been attached to for years, I felt so sorry for him. Other people’s children get into university and their parents give them this and that. My child gets high scores and is wondering which school to choose to save on tuition. As a parent, I feel helpless,” said Mr. Truc.

Twice taking the exam (block A and block B), Hoang saved every penny to save as much as possible. Now, knowing that he was the second-highest scorer in the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, his dream of becoming an electronics and telecommunications engineer is considered half successful. But Hoang's current family situation, his parents and everyone advised him to study at the Military Medical Academy to reduce some of the expenses. "I prefer to study at the University of Science and Technology, sister. But now my mother is sick, my father is raising 4 mouths by himself, and he also has to support my sister to study at the University of Economics in Da Nang, so... I thought carefully, I will still study at the University of Science and Technology, after graduating, I will work part-time, I will try to win a scholarship, I will take care of my own living expenses...", Hoang determined.
