Nghe An farmers use herbs to prevent shrimp diseases
(Baonghean) - To proactively prevent diseases for shrimp during erratic rainy and sunny days, farmers in Quynh Luu and Hoang Mai town (Nghe An) are actively visiting ponds, treating the environment and especially preventing diseases for shrimp with herbs.
Rain from the circulation of storm No. 3 in Nghe An has helped many localities "cool down" the drought over the past time. However, shrimp farmers are extremely worried because the temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen in the pond suddenly decrease and can cause disease in shrimp.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung in Quynh Xuan ward (Hoang Mai town) said that although the weather is rainy, shrimp farmers should not let the water level in the pond get too deep or too shallow. When the water level in the shrimp pond is high due to rain, it is necessary to release some surface water to maintain the water level in the pond, while avoiding sudden reduction in salinity, overflowing banks, and broken culverts.

As for Mr. Ho Xuan Minh in Quynh Bang commune (Quynh Luu), after hearing the weather forecast, his family carefully prepared disease prevention steps for shrimp.
Mr. Minh said: "The second crop of shrimp is often difficult to raise because of the erratic weather, so white-leg shrimp often suffer from diseases caused by viruses and bacteria such as: truncated antennae, worn legs, ulcers... To prevent diseases, we have to increase water pumping, clean the pond regularly, and increase the shrimp's resistance so that the shrimp can grow well."

During prolonged heavy rains, in addition to proactively caring for and preventing diseases for shrimp according to training experience, shrimp farmers also use folk remedies such as bringing in medicinal herbs and medicinal plants to prevent diseases.

Solanum procumbens is a medicinal plant that is good for preventing hepatopancreatic disease in shrimp and is used by people. After being purchased, it will be ground into powder, filtered to get the water and mixed with shrimp food. Photo: VH |
Along with following the care process according to the instructions of the agricultural sector, for many years now, my family has also purchased some medicinal plants such as: Solanum procumbens, Artemisia vulgaris, Dipsacus asper, and garlic to boil and concentrate, then mix into shrimp feed; this method can prevent and treat diarrhea and hepatopancreatic diseases very well and effectively.
Quynh Luu and Hoang Mai town have large shrimp farming areas in the whole province; each year shrimp output reaches approximately more than 5,000 tons. Up to this point, households have stocked about more than 700/900 hectares of shrimp for the second crop; the shrimp are currently between 30 and 50 days old. If well cared for, they will be ready for harvest after 3 months.
