After more than 10 years in the army, in 1984, the Political Commissar of the company Phan Van Hoa returned to his hometown. Thanks to the household contract policy, he applied to the People's Committee to receive 5 hectares of Hoi Sac wild lagoon. Raising fish and growing rice, he earned hundreds of millions of dong each crop. At that time, hybrid rice was not popular, each crop had to spend millions of dong to buy seeds. It was expensive and not proactive, sometimes buying "bad seeds" was like a failure.
A question arises in the mind of farmer Phan Van Hoa: Why don't we produce pure quality rice varieties to replace imported hybrid varieties? The question is like a torment.
Then in 2001, to have enough legal capacity to carry out the above idea, Mr. Hoa wrote a proposal to establish a company. On his journey to find pure rice varieties, he had the chance to meet Professor Vu Tuyen Hoang. Admiring the farmer with great ambition, the leading professor took him to the Institute of Food Crops and gave him 5 rice varieties to test.
Of those 5 varieties, only AC5 is suitable for Nghe An soil, so it grows well. From the initial 100 grams of seeds, he persistently tested them. By 2005, with enough seeds, he mobilized people in Hoa Thanh commune to plant them. The result was very satisfactory, that year the whole Hoa Thanh commune had a good harvest, with an average yield of 7.2 tons/ha/crop. The quality of the rice far surpassed hybrid rice and was accepted by the market. AC5 rice variety was chosen by people in the localities. The production area has continuously increased. In 2009, it was 4,000 hectares, and by 2013, it had reached nearly 100,000 hectares.
AC5 rice variety has become one of the main local varieties. Currently, the AC5 rice variety has been copyrighted by Vinh Hoa Company from the Food Crops Institute at a cost of 500 million VND.
From the success of the AC5 rice variety, Mr. Hoa once again nurtured the intention of finding a rice variety that was not only highly effective, but also had medicinal properties and was beneficial to health. To carry out this new idea, he decided to go to Hanoi to study at an agricultural university. Upon returning, with the knowledge he had learned, he quietly worked, sometimes in the laboratory, sometimes in the field, to select a new variety.
Since 2005, day by day, he has been cross-breeding varieties and adding nutrients to the plants. One day, in the experimental rice field, two “strange” purple rice flowers appeared, completely different from the surrounding rice flowers. Nearly 400 “strange” rice seeds were cherished by him like pearls.

Vinh Hoa herbal rice is tested and confirmed by the Center for Technical Standards and Quality Measurement (Quatesv1) under the General Department of Standards and Quality Measurement of Vietnam, the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene Control (Ministry of Health) as a type of rice rich in micronutrients, trace elements and vitamins A, B (B1, B2, B6...) Lipids, calcium, iron, fiber, especially omega (6-9) oryzanol... Eating rice from Vinh Hoa herbal rice makes you forget the feeling of hunger, beneficial for dieters. The main characteristics of this rice variety are that the plant and the grain are both Hue purple, the grain is pink, and the shape is beautiful. It has high yield and can be grown on any terrain. The outstanding feature of this new rice variety is that it is very delicious. The content of micronutrients is high, especially omega 6 and omega 9, which not all rice varieties have. These two substances have anti-aging, anti-cancer, and anti-osteoporosis effects. When eaten, it makes you forget the feeling of hunger, which is very beneficial for overweight people. Because of this characteristic, the rice variety is classified as a herbal rice variety. Currently, the National Center for Testing Plant Varieties and Fertilizers has recognized VH1 as a super primitive variety.

Farmer Phan Van Hoa has successfully created the VH1 rice variety with rare characteristics, which is a commendable result. To expand and effectively promote this variety, scientists need to select and crossbreed it into a rice variety with high purity and sustainability, increasing the content of valuable micronutrients in the rice grain. If this is done, the VH1 herbal rice variety will become an export product that enriches the country. |
