Farmers in Quynh Luu grow vegetables and flowers from Da Lat.
(Baonghean.vn) - With the goal of moving towards clean and sustainable production, Mr. Ngo Quang Hieu in Quynh Luong commune, Quynh Luu district, has invested more than 200 million VND to build a greenhouse for growing vegetables and flowers in the winter season.
On his plot of land, spanning over 2 sao (approximately 2,000 square meters), Mr. Ngo Quang Hieu in Quynh Luong commune, Quynh Luu district, has consistently cultivated a variety of vegetables and crops to increase economic value; earning an income of 150-200 million VND annually.

Thanks to the experience gained from visiting greenhouse vegetable and flower farming models in Da Lat City, this winter season Mr. Hieu has built two greenhouses with a total area of 550 m2 to grow winter crops.
Given the characteristics of the coastal commune, which frequently experiences storms, Mr. Hieu designed a greenhouse with pillars made of iron pipes, and the sides and roof covered with white mesh netting. The greenhouse has a drip irrigation system to save water, and black mesh netting is used to help dissipate heat and protect crops from excessive heat during hot weather.

Mr. Ngo Quang Hieu stated that the advantage of Quynh Luong commune is its fertile, loose soil, suitable for growing vegetables and flowers. However, traditional farming methods have not yielded high economic efficiency.
Therefore, he boldly invested 200 million VND to build this greenhouse. If successful, he plans to encourage households in the commune to establish a larger greenhouse vegetable farming project, contributing to increasing vegetable yields by 2-3 times compared to traditional farming methods.

After three months of construction, Mr. Hieu's two greenhouses were completed. To assess the yield of each crop, he planned one plot for tomato cultivation (the main crop in the Quynh Luong area), another plot where he recently planted 2,000 Dutch lily seedlings, and a third plot for experimental cultivation of 1,000 Monkara orchids. For the Monkara orchids, to create a rich, fibrous substrate for the roots to absorb nutrients, Mr. Hieu built concrete raised beds and applied a 20cm thick layer of peanut shell substrate.
To date, all three varieties of vegetables and flowers grown indoors have thrived, effectively controlling pests and diseases, and have never required the use of pesticides.

According to the leaders of Quynh Luong commune, although the locality has not yet provided financial support for Mr. Hieu's greenhouse model, during the trial planting process, the commune will send agricultural extension officers to regularly visit the model and provide technical support to ensure its success, making it a model for other coastal vegetable growers to learn from.
