Farmers busy preparing 'special products' for Tet
(Baonghean.vn) - Near Tet, special livestock such as wild boar, fighting cock, cow, and goat are increasingly attracting the attention of customers.
To prepare for the upcoming Lunar New Year, Mr. Nguyen Huy Hoang's family in hamlet 6, Quynh Thang commune (Quynh Luu) is focusing on taking care of a flock of fighting cocks for sale.
Mr. Hoang said that he used to raise fighting chickens mainly to sell the breeding stock, but now he also sells commercial chickens. Therefore, in the months before Tet, he actively took care of the diet, proactively kept his flock of more than 500 chickens warm and protected them from the cold.
In addition to a diet of roughage such as bran, corn, and rice, the flock of more than 100 fighting cocks is also supplemented with quality food such as shrimp, prawns, and miscellaneous fish from rivers and lakes to ensure adequate nutrition.
For commercial fighting cocks, the price during Tet is from 350,000 - 400,000 kg; even many cocks with good shape, good breed and many spurs are paid by customers for more than 10 million VND.

Not only Mr. Hoang's family with fighting cock products, at this time farmers in the district are actively increasing their herds and developing special breeds to serve the needs of Tet.
Mr. Ho Khac Hiep's wild boar farm in the mountainous commune of Quynh Thang with a scale of 500 pigs has invested hundreds of millions of dong to renovate and upgrade barns, allowing sows to breed to develop the total herd.

Wild boar is also a popular delicacy during Tet. Every year, Mr. Ho Khac Hiep's family in Quynh Thang commune prepares 200-250 pigs to serve Tet. Photo: Nhu Thuy. |
Wild boars need to be raised for a long time for their meat to be delicious, so he raises them for 12 months before selling them. The food source is also completely natural, such as sugarcane stalks, corn, cassava, sweet potatoes, and supplemented with brewer's dregs and a little mineral salt.
Currently, out of a total herd of 500 pigs, 250 pigs have reached the weight and time to be sold during Tet; on average, each pig weighs 30 - 40 kg, with a selling price at the barn of 130,000 VND/kg.

“For many years now, wild boar has been a favorite of customers, with an average family consuming about 30-40 pigs per month. During Tet, the number sold is double that of normal days...” - Mr. Hiep said.
It can be affirmed that the development of specialty livestock breeds not only helps breeders increase their income but also provides the market with many types of clean, quality food products, helping people have more choices for delicious and safe Tet meals./.
