Farmers enter mushroom production season to serve Tet market

For about a month now, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa's family in Hamlet 3, Dinh Son Commune has been busy producing mushrooms to serve the Tet market. The 420 m2 mushroom garden with 8,000 bags of oyster mushrooms and wood ear mushrooms is meticulously tended every day. While harvesting the second batch of wood ear mushrooms and gathering raw materials to increase production in time for Tet, Ms. Hoa's family has become busier these days.

Ms. Hoa said: The wood ear mushroom garden is expected to supply the market with more than 200 kg of wood ear mushrooms this Tet. This year, in addition to wood ear mushrooms and oyster mushrooms, the family also grows straw mushrooms that are popular in the market. To prepare enough quantity to sell for Tet, the family purchased 1 ton of dry straw for production.
Having only started mushroom production for 2 years, the production model of Ms. Bui Thi Mai Hoa's family in Tra Lan village, Phuc Son commune is a large-scale mushroom farm with effective income in Anh Son. To serve the Tet market, her family is currently focusing on preserving and caring for 1,500 bags of oyster mushrooms and 1,500 bags of wood ear mushrooms.

Ms. Hoa shared: To have an abundant supply of goods for Tet, with an area of 720m2, the family hired 3 workers to take care of the area, and focused on raw materials to increase production for the new crop. During this Tet holiday, the family will sell 200 kg of wood ear mushrooms and 400 kg of oyster mushrooms to the market. Accordingly, compared to normal times, the price of Tet mushrooms always increases by 1 kg of wood ear mushrooms, ranging from 80 - 100 thousand VND, oyster mushrooms 30 - 40 thousand VND/kg.
This year, in addition to the types of mushrooms she has produced, to increase her income, Ms. Hoa also produced 500 more bags of lingzhi mushrooms to serve customers during Tet with prices ranging from 500 to 1 million VND/kg depending on the type of mushroom.

Currently, Anh Son district has dozens of mushroom producing households, mainly concentrated in the communes of Dinh Son, Phuc Son, Linh Son and Lang Son with many large-scale models from 4,000 - 5,000 bags. Most households have invested in building systematic and scientific farms with sterilization ovens. At this time, people are preparing a very abundant amount of goods.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Son, director of Anh Son vocational training center, said: “Determining that mushrooms are an easy-to-grow product, do not require much capital, have a quick harvest time and are highly economically efficient, and mainly utilize agricultural by-products such as straw and sawdust, in 2013, Anh Son vocational training center coordinated with localities to bring mushrooms to households. Up to now, 4 training classes have been opened for people in Dinh Son, Hoa Son, Phuc Son and Lang Son communes.
In addition to the traditional mushrooms that have been produced in the past such as oyster mushrooms, button mushrooms, and wood ear mushrooms, this year people are also producing mushrooms with high economic value such as lingzhi mushrooms and straw mushrooms. At this time, people are entering the stage of cutting and caring for mushrooms, and are expected to harvest heavily from the New Year to the Lunar New Year 2017.
