On the morning of June 22, US President Donald Trump caused a stir when he announced on social media that US forces had just carried out a "very successful attack" on three nuclear facilities in Iran, including Fordow.

In a post on the Truth Social platform, Mr Trump said: "All planes are safely on their way home" and sent his congratulations to "our great American warriors".

President Trump ended his post with the words: "Now is the time for peace."

The move comes as Israel and Iran have been engaged in more than a week of fierce aerial fighting, causing casualties in both countries.

Israel launched attacks on Iran on the pretext of wanting to eliminate any possibility that Tehran could develop nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, Iran has always maintained that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Western diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict have so far been unsuccessful.

In another post, Mr Trump wrote simply: "Fordow is gone".

Reuters said Mr Trump appeared to be referring to the underground nuclear facility at Natanz. The airstrike came after B-2 bombers were deployed to Guam early on June 21 (US time), according to US sources.

A US official confirmed to Reuters that B-2 bombers were involved in the attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities.

It was not immediately clear whether Israeli forces were involved in the latest airstrike, which has dramatically expanded the scope of the conflict in the Middle East.
