After logging into the camera account installed at Ms. H's house, suspect Nguyen Quoc Viet recorded sensitive images and then called to threaten and blackmail.

On September 16, Cam Le District Police (Da Nang City) initiated a case, prosecuted the accused, and issued an order to temporarily detain Mr. Nguyen Quoc Viet (29 years old, from Hai Ba commune, Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province) to investigate the act of extortion.

According to initial investigation, suspect Viet is an employee of a technology company headquartered in Vinh Trung ward (Thanh Khe district, Da Nang city).

At the end of 2022, suspect Viet was assigned by the company to install 6 security cameras with recorders at the house of Ms. LLH (32 years old, residing in Hoa Xuan ward, Cam Le district).

During the installation process, suspect Viet both installed a camera account for Ms. H. and installed the camera account on his phone for management.

Recently, a Vietnamese suspect who invested in virtual currency lost money and had to borrow money, unable to pay it back.

In early September 2023, this young man had the idea of logging into the camera accounts previously installed for customers to secretly watch, record sensitive, private scenes, and then send threatening messages to customers for the purpose of blackmail.

This young man remembered that Ms. H.'s house had a camera installed in the bedroom, so he accessed the account and recorded the images, saving them on his phone.

After that, the Vietnamese suspect called Ms. H. to say that he was holding 2 sensitive clips and asked for 130 million VND to delete them. Ms. H. negotiated a price reduction to 110 million VND and the Vietnamese suspect accepted.

On September 14, suspect Viet texted Ms. H. asking her to transfer 20 million VND. After receiving the money, Viet demanded the remaining amount be transferred, threatening that if she did not comply, he would sell the sensitive clips to a third party or post them on obscene websites.

Ms. H. reported the incident to the police.

Searching the suspect Viet's rented room in Dien Ngoc ward (Dien Ban town, Quang Nam province), the police seized a mobile phone containing two clips recorded from Ms. H's home camera and two laptops.

Through this incident, the police recommend that when installing cameras, people need to be vigilant in changing the password for management.
