This November, Ms. Nguyen Minh Hong, a teacher and Head of the Literature Department at Huynh Thuc Khang High School, is one of more than 20 outstanding individuals honored at the "Educational Talent Development Fund" Award.

On this occasion, Ms. Nguyen Minh Hong shared with Nghe An Newspaper and Radio & Television about her journey to becoming a teacher and meaningful stories about her days in the classroom.

MissTeacher Nguyen Minh Hong:November each year is a time for the whole society to honor the mission and role of teachers. Looking back on my journey of more than 28 years standing on the podium, I am even more confident in my choice, because with the teaching profession, I have the opportunity to connect with the younger generation, to develop my abilities and strengths, and to improve myself every day.

Among those choices, Literature was the most suitable subject, because I have been involved with it since my time as a student at Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School. Encouraged and nurtured by my teachers, I, in turn, hope to pass on my love of Literature to future generations of students.

PV:I've interviewed many excellent students in Literature, some of whom have won first prize or top marks in provincial and national competitions. What concerns me a little is that, despite being excellent students, they don't read much. In other words, their approach to and reception of literature today is different from ours in the past. MissTeacher Nguyen Minh Hong:In fact, in the digital age, with the development of audiovisual media and various forms of entertainment, the pressure of studying and exams is quite high. This will certainly lead to Gen Z and Gen Alpha having a different approach to books and reading compared to our time. Many students, including high-achieving ones, read less or read in a pragmatic way, only pursuing short-term goals at a specific point in time. Therefore, their approach to and reception of literature is also different from before.

However, I believe that there are still many young people who love books, understand the value of books, and want to spread their passion for reading to everyone. In fact, I see that young people today read and spread their passion in different, dynamic, positive, and quite effective ways. For example, through club activities, book reviews, promoting and sharing good books, organizing writing competitions, and utilizing digital technology to connect the book-loving community everywhere…

This is a positive sign, giving us hope that, no matter the era, books will always hold an irreplaceable place. And along with books, the love of literature will surely be preserved and developed.

From the teachers' perspective, the current context of educational reform presents many new demands, the core of which is the shift from teaching.ants awaketo developmentpower force and product matter.This requirement is not easy for all subjects, especially Literature, a subject with many unique characteristics.
In my opinion, this is a matter of methodology, because regardless of the era, knowledge, competence, and character remain the goals we strive for. Focusing on developing competence, guiding students on how to approach and acquire knowledge, and self-improving their character will be the most effective educational approach. Through this path, we will help students become independent and proactive in their learning, nurturing an unquenchable passion for literature.

MissTeacher Nguyen Minh Hong:Being a homeroom teacher is a wonderful experience in the teaching profession, as it offers more opportunities to bond with students. A homeroom teacher simultaneously fulfills the roles of a subject teacher and a manager, guiding and leading a class throughout their secondary education, like a captain. Therefore, it's an opportunity, a joy, but also a responsibility, coupled with considerable pressure. To fulfill this task, connecting with students remains the most important secret.

To foster student cohesion, the essential step is to build a united, self-reliant, and cohesive group focused on a common goal. In this environment, students will see themselves as indispensable parts of the class, becoming active participants in building the group and fostering mutual support. Throughout their journey in high school, the homeroom teacher will be a guide, a companion, providing support and guidance as needed.

PV: We've always said, "First the devil, second the ghost, third the student." Are you worried about having some unruly students in your class? And as a homeroom teacher, what do you consider most important?

Teacher Nguyen Minh Hong:Having students with behavioral issues is something you can encounter in any classroom. What's important is how we support and guide them during this transitional period into adulthood.

I once went through that difficult period with some of my students. The first thing to do is to understand the causes and roots of those problems.float chaos,power opposite toThis should be done with empathy, understanding, sharing, and without judgment. Each child has their own personality and challenges, requiring appropriate methods and support. Under no circumstances should they feel inferior or alone on their journey to overcome their shortcomings and correct their mistakes.

To best support the students, coordination with parents, the school, and other organizations and individuals, especially classmates, is necessary. This also aligns with the goal of building a united, independent, and close-knit class community.

They will have close friendships, find joy in coming to class, feel proud of their group and their school, and learn to build relationships. They will be empowered to be autonomous, manage their classroom, and solve problems independently. The homeroom teacher will play a guiding, advising, and supportive role when needed. From this classroom, students will shape their self-worth and confidently strive for personal growth.

However, there are differing opinions surrounding this issue, with many arguing that it is a form of formalism that places a burden on teachers.What are your personal thoughts on the fact that you implemented many of these solutions alone and they were all recognized as provincial-level innovative solutions?

MissTeacher Nguyen Minh Hong:Educational innovation initiatives are scientific works that distill new solutions with practical applications, which are essential for educational reform, especially in the current period. If writing these initiatives becomes a mandatory activity or is solely linked to performance evaluations, it will become a mere formality, even a burden. However, when the process of developing innovative teaching practices becomes an opportunity for teachers to be creative, improve their professional skills, and develop their scientific research capabilities, this problem will certainly be eradicated.

The 2018 General Education Program currently opens up many potentials for applying new teaching methods, like a fertile field where many creative ideas can be sown.

The solutions I implemented were all in that spirit and stemmed from practical experience at Huynh Thuc Khang High School. Here, I benefited from the many achievements of a school with a 105-year history, modern facilities, the cooperation of enthusiastic and experienced colleagues, and the encouragement of a vibrant scientific research movement… Therefore, as the author of several provincial-level innovative teaching methods, I feel very fortunate to have been given so many opportunities.

MissTeacher Nguyen Minh Hong:The 2018 General Education Program is designed with the goal of comprehensively changing educational methods, helping students develop fully in terms of knowledge, skills, and personal qualities, with a focus on developing soft skills and life skills in all subjects.

Based on the program's objectives and inspired by the teaching process, I am interested in developing solutions related to skill development such as debate, communication, and promoting a reading culture.

The widespread implementation of these solutions helps to develop students' language skills, critical thinking, and communication skills, contributing to the creation of well-rounded, dynamic, and creative individuals who are proactive and flexible in responding to emerging demands in life. These are all issues of practical significance, relevant to the demands of modern life today.
