Female lawyer embezzled billions of dong from her client

Saying she needed money to pay off a bank loan and promising to pay high interest, a female lawyer in Dong Thap borrowed billions of dong from her client and others and then embezzled it.

On May 11, the High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City considered the petition for a reduced sentence of Pham Thi Ai Lien (41 years old, former lawyer in Dong Thap) for the crimes of Fraud and Abuse of trust to appropriate property.

In 2011, Lien was hired by Ms. Ha to represent her in several civil cases. When they became close, she repeatedly asked her clients to borrow money to pay off bank debts and promised to pay 3-12% interest per month.

Trusting, from 2012 to 2013, Ms. Ha lent the lawyer a total of 2.6 billion VND. However, Lien lent the money to others at higher interest rates and spent it all.

Lien was also authorized by another client to receive more than 120 million VND to execute the judgment. The female lawyer embezzled this money and only returned 50 million VND after the client asked for it many times.

Also using the excuse of the bank's maturity date, Lien borrowed 2.5 billion VND from Mr. Phu but did not pay, trying to avoid him. The incident was reported to the police.

In the middle of last year, the People's Court of Dong Phap province sentenced Lien to 24 years in prison for fraud and abuse of trust. She later appealed for a reduced sentence.

In court today, Lien looked depressed and older than her age. After the formalities, the panel of judges decided to adjourn the trial due to the absence of the victim.
