On July 16, President of the Brazilian House of Representatives Eduardo Cunha said that holding a “political trial” to try President Dilma Rousseff was entirely possible, but he said that if that happened, it would be a step backward for the democracy of this South American country.

Speaking to reporters the same day, Mr. Cunha - leader of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) in the ruling coalition, said the answer would be given within the next 30 days after conducting an investigation into the opposition's accusations in Congress regarding Ms. Rousseff's use of bribes during last year's presidential campaign.

Mr Cunha will have to decide whether to hold a “political trial” against Ms Rousseff as requested by opposition lawmakers.

In a related development, the Brazilian Senate has voiced its opposition to the police searching the homes of several politicians, including Congressman Fernando Collor de Mello, former President of the country (1990-1992), without presenting a court warrant as required.

The Brazilian Senate affirmed that this action by the police also violated the regulations of the National Assembly that do not allow federal police to invade the residences of Senate members./.
