Fraudulent nurse sentenced to prison
(Baonghean) - On May 19, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened the first instance trial of the case of Fraudulent appropriation of property against defendant Le Thi Hong Tiep (born in 1984, residing in Hamlet 8, Nam Trung Commune, Nam Dan District).
According to the indictment, since 2011, when Tiep was working as a nurse at Thanh An Saigon Hospital (located on Ly Thuong Kiet Street, Vinh City), due to business losses and inability to pay debts, he came up with the idea of defrauding to appropriate money. Under the guise of having an acquaintance working at the Red Cross Society so he could do the procedures to organize sending people to work abroad, in August 2011, knowing that Ms. Nguyen Thi Luc (50 years old, living in the same locality) had that intention, Tiep approached and persuaded Ms. Luc to pay 2,000 - 4,500 USD (depending on the country) to go to work abroad. Ms. Luc gave 126 million VND to take care of the paperwork, and at the same time called on 20 other people who also wanted to go to work abroad to ask her to take them. The total amount of money that Tiep defrauded and profited from the victims was up to nearly 2.5 billion VND. Of which, Tiep gave Ms. Luc 273,000,000 VND to cover travel expenses and hotel expenses for the workers when they went to Hanoi to check in for their flights.
However, the people who gave money to Tiep waited for a long time but still could not fly, suspecting Tiep of fraud, the victims filed a complaint with the police. Tiep was arrested and prosecuted for the crime of Fraudulent appropriation of property.
The panel of judges clarified that Ms. Nguyen Thi Luc was the one who received the above amount of money, but then gave it to Tiep because she did not know about her fraudulent behavior, so she was not prosecuted. At the end of the trial, the court sentenced the defendant Le Thi Hong Tiep to 17 years in prison for fraud and property appropriation, and ordered her to compensate the victims the entire amount of 2,491,000,000 VND.
