Volcanic eruption in Indonesia
On the afternoon of September 17, Gamalama volcano in the Molucca Islands, eastern Indonesia erupted, causing gray smoke to cover the city of Ternate.
According to local officials, the volcano had previously had two strong eruptions over the weekend and continued to erupt on the afternoon of September 17.
Authorities have asked residents to stay indoors to avoid being affected. Evacuation orders have also been issued for those living within a 2.5km area around the volcano. There are currently no reports of damage or injuries.

“At around 2:15 p.m. on September 17, the volcano erupted, accompanied by explosions on the summit and smoke rising over 1,000 meters from the summit stretching from the east, southeast to the south,” said Mr. Lamani, head of the Gamalama volcano observation station. “By 2:30 p.m., we had raised the alert level from level 2 to level 3, the highest level.”
Gamalama volcano is 1,715m high and sits above the city of Ternate. Its last eruption was in 2011, killing four people.
