Fish sauce is a mixture of salts and amino acids. Besides being used as food, fish sauce is also a medicine.

According to Vietnamese standards, fish sauce has 4 types: special type with protein content over 30, premium type 25, type 1 is 15, type 2 (lowest type) is 10 protein and salt content from 250-285 g/liter. In addition, there are phosphorus compounds, iodine, many vitamins A, D and B12 and other trace elements. Special type and premium type are used as dipping sauce; type 1 and type 2 are used for cooking.

According to Oriental medicine, fish sauce has a salty, sweet taste, neutral properties; enters the spleen, kidney, stomach and large intestine meridians. There is also fish bile which has a bitter taste with low content but combined with the salty taste of minerals, the sweet taste of amino acids goes to the heart, liver, spleen and kidney, to clear heat in the heart, dispel wind and regulate qi in the liver, eliminate dampness in the spleen, moisten the lower body and nourish yin, and elevate yang and consolidate qi in the kidney.

Fish sauce benefits the blood, nourishes the liver and kidneys, clears the blood vessels, is diuretic, and laxative. Used as a spice, appetizer, and digestive aid. Used in cases of colds, windstroke, stiff limbs, cramps, stiff jaw, exhaustion, constipation, anemia, etc. Dosage: 5-30 ml in food seasoning.

Some ways to use fish sauce to prevent and treat diseases:

To increase energy when swimming or soaking in cold water in winter: drink 1-2 sips of good fish sauce (15-30 ml).

For people with colds causing stomach cramps: drink 1-2 tablespoons of pure fish sauce (10-20 ml).

Diet sauce: 30 ml pure fish sauce, add a little garlic, vinegar or sugar and crushed fresh ginger slices. This is a type of sauce eaten with fresh or boiled vegetables; or fish sauce mixed with rice, or mixed with white porridge. Very good for people with diarrhea, bloating, digestive disorders who need to diet.

Contraindications: Hypertensive patients should limit the use of fish sauce, diabetics and people with nephritis and edema should abstain.
