From Hanh Lam commune (Thanh Chuong), Mr. Cuong and his wife brought their young grandson to Vinh city to attend the court very early. He came here as the legal representative of the victim in a murder case - that is, his eldest son. The person bowing his head in the dock is also his youngest son.

He sighed, “Three sons are not rich. My family has three sons, not only are they not rich but also unhappy…”. Of the three sons, only the second son got married but they went to the South to make a living. Due to difficulties, they sent their grandson back to his parents. The boy has lived with his grandparents since he was 1 year old until now. Le Dinh Dung (born in 1986) - the eldest son and Le Van Thang (born in 1991) - the youngest son are still living with their parents.

Thang finished 9th grade and then dropped out, worked as a construction worker, cut rubber trees for hire, and then got into drugs without realizing it. After more than ten years of working as a commune security officer, he realized Thang’s abnormalities. When he knew for sure, his son was already a serious drug addict. “I was afraid that he would be addicted, not have money to satisfy his cravings, and steal or trade drugs, so I decided to report him to the police. He would go to jail, and if he could quit drugs, he would have a future. When he was arrested and imprisoned, I also asked to quit working as a security officer. At that time, there were still a few months left until he completed 15 years, enough time to receive support from the State…”, he confided.

For the act of illegally storing drugs, Le Dinh Thang was sentenced to 2 years in prison by the Thanh Chuong District People's Court. Due to his good behavior, Thang was released 4 months early from prison. When he returned home, Thang was determined to work hard, joining his brother in a construction team to earn money to rebuild his life. Seeing his son's diligence and determination, Mr. Cuong was secretly happy, but his joy only lasted for a little over twenty days.

On the afternoon of October 25, 2016, Thang and Dung went to a neighbor's house to celebrate the completion of a construction project. After that, Thang went to pick up his friends. Seeing that his younger brother was gone for too long, Dung called Thang, afraid that he would continue to hang out with bad friends and use drugs, but Thang did not answer. Dung went to look for his younger brother and asked him to come home to talk to his parents.

In front of his parents, Thang insisted that he did not use drugs, but Dung did not believe him, leading to an argument between the two brothers. Thang stabbed Dung and was pulled out by his mother and cousin. “When I saw blood soaking his shirt, I panicked and called for everyone to take him to the emergency room. Only then did Thang come to his senses and frantically took him to the hospital. Knowing that Dung would not survive, I called the police. Thang, knowing his crime, turned himself in…”, he recounted his horrifying memories.

At the end of the investigation, the authorities determined that Thang’s actions were “Murder due to exceeding the limits of legitimate self-defense” because the victim was at fault and kicked and hit first. After considering the entire case and considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the panel sentenced Le Dinh Thang to 9 months in prison./.
