Sturgeon is a high-value imported fish, originating from Russia, which has been imported to Vietnam since 2005 and raised in a cold water environment with a temperature of 18 to 240C. To implement the project, since the beginning of October 2011, the partner has built facilities including a water pipeline system with a length of over 200 meters from the well on top of Xao Va waterfall to a system of 3 farming tanks, with water valves installed according to technical standards to circulate water in the farming tanks and a drainage system to ensure the temperature and water environment in the farming tanks. On November 8, 2011, the batch of 500 fish out of a total of 1,000 fish weighing from 400 grams to 600 grams and the corresponding amount of food according to the plan was transported from Thai Nguyen Aquatic Center for release. Initially, through testing, these fish showed that they quickly adapted to the new environment. It is known that sturgeon that are raised and cared for well after one year can reach a weight of 2 to 2.5 kg/fish. According to market prices, currently one kilogram of commercial fish costs between 250,000 and 300,000 VND.
The implementation of the sturgeon farming project in the Xao Va waterfall area can open up prospects for building and developing cold-water fish farming in the mountainous district of Que Phong.
