(Baonghean) -In 2012, implementing the economic development support program, Quynh Luu district started to build a giant freshwater prawn farming model. The success of this model will open a new direction in freshwater aquaculture areas in the district.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tuan's family, hamlet 18, Quynh Van commune is the only household that Quynh Luu district has invested in building a giant freshwater prawn farming model this year. With a nursery area of 1,000m2, his family is supported 100% of the cost of buying prawns and 30% of the cost of feed, with a total value of 80 million VND. At the time of release, the post-larvae shrimp were purchased from a hatchery in Hau Giang province with a quantity of 75,000 prawns. Up to now, the prawns have been released for 2 and a half months. To increase the pH and make the prawns molt quickly and harden their shells, every 10 days he adds 15 kg of lime and 10 kg of stone powder. Currently, with the support of the district's Agricultural and Fisheries Extension Station, Mr. Tuan's family is leveling the pond, increasing the area to 2,000m2 and checking the survival rate of prawns to balance the food source appropriately.

Mr. Tuan said: "Raising giant freshwater prawns in freshwater areas is a high-value livestock. The raising and care time is normal, like industrial shrimp. The main food is industrial food, and care must follow the correct process."

Not only has the strength in brackish water aquaculture, Quynh Luu is also a district with a large freshwater aquaculture area of over 1,800 hectares. In order to gradually replace traditional farming species with low economic value such as silver carp, grass carp, etc., the district has been building many new models, focusing on introducing new breeds with high economic value such as monosex tilapia, square-head snakehead fish, giant freshwater prawn, etc. In particular, the giant freshwater prawn farming model has shown positive results in a short time. After only 2 and a half months, the shrimp weight has reached about 300 - 350 shrimp/kg. If well cared for, following the correct technical process and favorable weather conditions, the shrimp will be harvested on the occasion of the Lunar New Year of Quy Ty with a weight of about 40 shrimp/kg. Mr. Nguyen Anh Hung - Head of the Agricultural Extension Station of Quynh Luu District, said: "With the initial results, we hope to successfully introduce giant freshwater prawns from the South to the area to expand for people to raise."

Currently, in the Northern region, only two provinces, Bac Ninh and Thanh Hoa, have succeeded in building a giant freshwater prawn farming model. In Nghe An province, only Quynh Luu is the first district to build this model. Therefore, if successful, it will be widely replicated.
