On the evening of April 6, US President Barack Obama met at the White House with House Speaker John A. Boehner and Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader in Congress, but these leaders failed to reach an agreement to end the budget impasse that is threatening to shut down the government.

After the meeting ended, Mr. Obama warned that a government shutdown was inevitable.

"A government shutdown is going to have a real impact on everyday life," the president said at a White House press conference.

This night meeting, convened by Mr. Obama since the afternoon of April 6, clearly shows the tension in the US capital when the White House and Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill criticized each other fiercely all day before the possibility of a government shutdown on April 9. The government's authority to spend the budget will end on the night of April 8.

This will be the 16th US government shutdown since former President Jimmy Carter. From fiscal years 1977 to 1980, the US government had to shut down six times, each lasting from 8 to 17 days. From fiscal years 1981 to 1995, the US had nine government shutdowns, each lasting no more than three days.
