Guava from Nghe An, grown according to VietGAP standards, commands a high price and attracts many customers.
(Baonghean.vn) - For many years, Nghia Son and Nghia Lam communes (Nghia Dan district) have been known far and wide for their specialty fruit, the pear guava. To increase production value per unit area, many households have built production models according to VietGAP standards, covering nearly 14 hectares.
The advantages of this guava variety are its large size, thick flesh, few seeds, and sweet, fragrant taste. The guavas are purchased directly from the orchards by traders at prices twice as high as similar guavas sold in the market.

Pear guava is an easy-to-grow variety that can be planted at any time of year. It has a short growing season, high fruit set rate and yield, and can be harvested year-round. The seedless Taiwanese pear guava, currently widely grown in Nghia Son and Nghia Lam communes, is a new variety that is less susceptible to disease, has a strong and healthy trunk, and good pest and disease resistance.
This guava variety also allows for controlled fruit production. With proper care, the tree can bear fruit up to 6 months after planting. The time from fruit setting to ripening varies depending on the season (summer: 3 to 3.5 months; winter: 4 to 4.5 months). After each harvest, pruning is necessary to encourage the tree to sprout, flower, and bear fruit again.

When the fruit is about the size of a thumb, it should be wrapped in specialized protective bags. Alternatively, you can use plastic bags lined with foam, paper, or old cloth sewn into bags. Wrapping the fruit will help protect it from harmful insects and ensure the guava is fragrant, delicious, hygienic, and safe to eat.

Mr. Le Sy Dinh, Chairman of the 19/5 Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative, added: To regulate the cultivation and consumption of this product, since the establishment of the 19/5 Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative in September 2017, the cooperative has conducted surveys and established a floor price every three months for selling products to small traders and businesses.
Currently, guava at the end of the season is being bought by traders at 25-30 thousand VND/kg. During Tet (Lunar New Year), this variety sells for 50-60 thousand VND/kg. With 1 hectare of pear guava trees, after deducting all expenses, farmers earn 200-250 million VND per year.

To date, the pear-shaped guava variety grown in Nghia Dan district has been officially certified with electronic traceability labels by the Department of Science and Technology in coordination with the Agricultural Service Cooperative. Furthermore, the Regional Center for Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries Quality, under the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries Quality Management, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, has just granted VietGAP certification to the 19/5 Agricultural Service Cooperative in Nghia Dan district, covering an area of 13.8 hectares.
