Olympics: Athlete nearly dies after pole breaks
Cuban pole vaulter Lazaro Borges had a lucky escape when his pole broke in three during his jump.
Pieces of the pole flew and Borges fell onto the safety cushion below.
This rare accident did not cause any injuries to Borges or the nearby referees. Borges was also very calm and collected the pieces of the pole so that the athletes could continue competing.
Borges failed his first two jumps at 5.35 metres and only succeeded on his last jump. However, when he raised the bar to 5.6 metres, Borges failed to clear all three jumps and had to say goodbye to the Olympics right in the qualifying round.
Borges won a silver medal at the world championship.
