Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on the morning of August 13 ordered the national police force to arrest Senator Hong Sokhua of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) for distorting the Cambodia-Vietnam treaty on border issues.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony for students of Phnom Penh International University (PPIU), Prime Minister Hun Sen accused Mr. Hong Sokhua of “treason” when he distorted on his personal Facebook page that Article 4 of the above treaty stipulates that “the two sides will sign a treaty to abolish the border between the two countries.”

According to a government press release issued shortly after Hun Sen’s statement, Article 4 of the 1979 Cambodia-Vietnam Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation states: “The two sides will negotiate to sign a treaty based on the current border line with the determination to build this border line into a border of peace, friendship and long-term cooperation between the two countries.”

The statement completely rejected Mr. Hong Sokhua's distortions and said that it would use "the most decisive legal measures" against him to maintain public order and uphold the law in Cambodia.

Senator Hong Sokhua is considered one of the closest associates of CNRP President Sam Rainsy and was the one who brought the map, which CNRP said was taken from France, to the map research team at the Royal Academy of Cambodia on August 10.

On the afternoon of August 13, CNRP acting spokesman Ou Chantharith denied press reports that authorities had arrested Hong Sokhua at CNRP headquarters earlier that day.
