Moon Jae-in was inaugurated as President of South Korea a day after winning a snap election with 41.1% of the vote.

“I will become a president for all the people (of South Korea),” Mr. Moon said in a simple swearing-in ceremony at the South Korean National Assembly headquarters.

“My mind is filled with a detailed plan to open a new world of unification and coexistence…”, quoted from the speech of the new President of South Korea Moon Jae-in.

Also in his inaugural speech, Mr. Moon announced that he might visit Pyongyang if conditions allowed and expressed his readiness to reopen negotiations on the issue of installing the THAAD missile defense system with the US and China as soon as possible.

The election of new President Moon Jae-in marks the end of a decade of conservative rule. However, Moon Jae-in will face four main challenges.

The first challenge is the North Korean nuclear threat. The nuclear issue is now at the heart of inter-Korean relations. If he plans to implement a “Sunshine Policy 2.0,” new President Moon Jae-in will need to convince critics that resuming economic cooperation will not fund Pyongyang’s nuclear program.

The second challenge is that, caught between the US and China, Mr. Moon will try to pursue an independent foreign policy that pleases both Beijing and Washington.

The third challenge lies in solving South Korea's current economic problems, such as high youth unemployment and over-reliance on the export economy.

The final challenge is building trust and amending the constitution to make it more transparent and participatory, following the political scandal of former President Park Geun-hye.
