The decree reads: "Taking into account the will expressed by the people of Crimea in the all-Crimea referendum of March 16, I declare that the Republic of Crimea, where the city of Sevastopol enjoys a special status, is recognized as an independent and sovereign state."
The news added that this decree takes effect immediately after signing.
Previously, in the referendum held on March 16, 96.6% of voters in Crimea voted to join the Russian Federation.
In another poll, more than 90% of Russians also supported the annexation of Crimea into the Russian Federation.
