Mr. Ted Osius was nominated to hold the position of US Ambassador to Vietnam.

On May 15, US President Barack Obama nominated career diplomat, Associate Professor Ted Osius as US Ambassador to Vietnam to replace Mr. David Shear, who was nominated as Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia-Pacific.

Ted Osius is currently an Associate Professor at the National War College in Washington, and is a career diplomat.

In 1997, he was Political Attaché at the US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City; from 1998-2001, he was an advisor to Vice President Al Gore on Asia; from 2002-2004, he was a diplomatic officer in charge of science, technology and environment at the US Embassy in Thailand, and then for 2 years, he was Deputy Director of the Department of Korean Affairs.

From 2006-2009, he was Minister Counselor in charge of politics at the US Embassy in India; from mid-2009 to 2012, he was Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy in Indonesia.

The website of the US Embassy in Vietnam said that Mr. Ted Osius has a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a master's degree from the School of International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.

In 1996, Mr. Osius was part of the first delegation of US officials to Vietnam since bilateral relations were normalized and he spent a year in Hanoi preparing the ground for the presence of the first US Ambassador to Vietnam.

The decision to appoint Mr. Ted Osius is still pending approval by the US Senate./.
