President Donald Trump says China may have hacked the emails of Democratic Party officials to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election.

“If you can’t catch the hacker, well, it’s hard to know who did it. It could have been China, it could have been a lot of different groups,” Reuters quoted Mr. Trump as saying.

On the eve of the November 8, 2016 presidential election, Mr. Trump, then the Republican candidate, also made a similar assessment. He said that China may have hacked the emails of Democratic Party officials to interfere in this election. Previously, in the live debate with Mrs. Clinton on September 26, 2016, Mr. Trump also said that China was one of the factors that could be behind the cyber attack in the US. However, in all of his accusations, Mr. Trump did not provide evidence for his judgment.

In the email scandal last year, hackers made public the content of controversial emails exchanged between senior members of the Democratic Party and aides to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. One of the leaked emails showed that Democratic leaders favored Clinton over other presidential candidates in the party, which may have led to the former US secretary of state being chosen as the party’s candidate to run against Trump.

Trump’s comments contradict the view of US intelligence officials that Russia was behind cyber attacks during the 2016 US election. Like Russia, China has long been seen as a rival in the US cybersecurity field. In recent weeks, Trump has appeared to tone down his rhetoric and move closer to China in an effort to seek Beijing’s cooperation in reining in Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs.
