Mr Zelensky will fire Ukraine's top general this week
(Baonghean.vn) - CNN news agency on January 31 quoted sources as saying that President Volodymyr Zelensky intends to fire Ukraine's top general, Valery Zaluzhny, this weekend. This information follows similar rumors appearing in newspapers such as the Financial Times and the Washington Post.

Relations between Ukraine’s two top leaders reportedly began to deteriorate when General Zaluzhny wrote an article for the Economist last November describing the situation on the battlefield as a “stalemate” after Kiev’s failed counter-offensive. President Zelensky has vehemently rejected that assessment.
According to CNN, Zaluzhny was called to President Zelensky's office on January 29 and told he would be fired in the next few days. Although no official announcement has been made yet, a source told CNN that the presidential decree is expected by the end of the week.
The Washington Post reported that President Zelensky explained his decision to Zaluzhny by saying that a new commander was needed to improve the situation, as the Ukrainian people were tired of war while Kiev’s backers had reduced military aid. The general was then offered an advisory position, but he declined, choosing to leave the military altogether.
After the news of Zaluzhny’s imminent dismissal leaked, President Zelensky’s spokesman, Sergey Nikiforov, issued an official statement calling the information “untrue.” The Ukrainian Defense Ministry also posted a message on social media declaring the rumors to be false.
The New York Times reported on January 30 that the Ukrainian president had decided to reconsider the decision after the initial plan was published in the press. However, another source told the newspaper that the dismissal was only temporarily delayed while Kiev searched for a suitable replacement for Zaluzhny.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the rumors as a sign that Kiev’s leadership is in chaos and has “a lot of problems.” He predicted that the divisions between Ukraine’s military and civilian leadership, stemming from the failed counteroffensive, would continue to grow as Russia continues its military campaign to achieve its goals./.
