Taking advantage of the homeowner's carelessness and negligence, the maid stole many assets with a total value of over 6 billion VND and then fled. However, by using professional measures, the police investigation agency of Binh Thanh District quickly tracked down and arrested the culprit while she was preparing for her wedding.

At about 12:30 on November 2, 2012, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Hang (born in 1971), the owner of villa number 92 Nguyen Huu Canh, Ward 22, Binh Thanh District, returned home. When she entered the bedroom, she discovered that her handbag on top of the wardrobe had been rummaged through. 600 USD and 100 million VND had disappeared. In addition, a jewelry set including 2 pairs of diamond earrings, a necklace with a gemstone pendant, 1 bracelet, 1 gold ring with a total value of about 300,000 USD also disappeared. Notably, one pair of earrings was worth up to 200,000 USD.

All suspicions focused on the housekeepers. Ms. Hang hired three people, one of whom took care of her 2-month-old child, one cooked, and one cleaned the house. Before the theft occurred, the housekeeper named Dung had gone to an unknown location. Checking the camera, Ms. Hang discovered that Dung had sneaked into her bedroom to rummage through her belongings, so she went to the police to report and provide additional images.

Subject Pham Thi Dung

It is worth mentioning that Dung was hired by Ms. Hang to work for only two months through a job placement center in District 1. About a week before committing the theft, Dung told Ms. Hang that both her parents and husband had passed away, Dung lived with her aunt and inherited a piece of land in Binh Phuoc. Now Dung wanted to get her ID card back to go through the procedures to sell the land. Ms. Hang also did not know where Dung's family lived or what their circumstances were. Therefore, when the theft occurred, it was very difficult for the investigation agency to verify the identity of the subject named Dung. Contacting the job placement center in District 1, the subject declared in her profile her name as Pham Thi Dung (born in 1981, permanent residence in Phuoc Tho hamlet, Phuoc Hung commune, Long Dien district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province).

Immediately, a reconnaissance team was sent to Ba Ria - Vung Tau province to investigate and verify. Through the images provided by the investigation agency, the local authorities confirmed that this was Phan Thi Dung, a local resident. Dung had been married once and had three children, two boys and one girl, but her husband died early. However, the subject had left the locality 5 years ago and her whereabouts were unknown. Once again, the victim's whereabouts were shrouded in mystery.

Determined not to let the thief escape, using professional measures, the Investigation Police Department of Binh Thanh District Police discovered that before fleeing, Dung often contacted her lover named Hai (residing in Can Tho City). On November 22, 2012, detectives discovered that Dung was at Hai's house, so they coordinated with local police to raid and arrest the suspect. At the investigation agency, Pham Thi Dung honestly confessed her theft. Accordingly, while cleaning the house, she saw that the homeowner often left valuable assets without being careful. Dung planned to steal the assets to... use as a "dowry" for her husband.

On November 2, 2012, after stealing a large amount of property, Dung took a taxi to Mien Dong bus station and then took a bus back to her hometown in Ba Ria - Vung Tau. On the way home, Dung stopped at a gold shop in Ba Ria market to sell the most valuable pair of earrings. Dung offered a price of 15,000 USD, but the shop owner saw that Dung was selling the earrings without any papers, so he only agreed to buy them for 10,000 USD. Seeing that Dung seemed easy to take advantage of, the owner of the gold shop continued to complain that the gemstones were scratched and reduced the price to 8,000 USD. After selling the earrings, Dung went home and gave her mother 4 million VND, her sister-in-law 6 million VND, her brother-in-law 300 USD, and paid off her relatives' debt of 40 million VND. On the morning of November 3, 2012, Dung took a bus back to Can Tho to meet her lover. Seeing that Dung had a lot of money, Hai repeatedly asked Dung, and Dung said that the money came from selling the plantation inherited from her parents.

Dung urged Hai to quickly register their marriage. Hai agreed, but to register their marriage, they needed to have a certificate of celibacy from both of them. Hai's wife had passed away a long time ago, so it was not difficult. Dung was in hiding, so she was afraid of being discovered. Using the excuse that the house was far away, Dung urged Hai to get married first and then register later. To prepare for the wedding, Dung spent money to buy a scooter worth 30 million VND and asked Hai to register it; bought Hai's family 2 TVs, 1 refrigerator, 1 player for about 21.5 million VND, and also bought a mobile phone and wedding items including 2 rings, and rented a wedding dress for 9 million VND. Dung and Hai planned to hold their wedding on November 27. However, on November 22, Dung was arrested, much to the surprise of Hai and his family.

When she was arrested, Dung still had 1,500 USD and 49.5 million VND on her. The investigation agency also recovered the jewelry that Dung had not yet sold, including a necklace, bracelet, and ring worth about 200 thousand USD. Currently, the investigation police agency has detained Phan Thi Dung and initiated a criminal case. This is also a warning to families who hire domestic help but are careless and create conditions for bad guys to act.
