Palestinians declare Gaza ceasefire has collapsed

August 20, 2014 07:15

The head of the Palestinian delegation in Cairo, who is taking part in indirect talks with Israel, Azzam al-Ahmed, said the temporary ceasefire in Gaza "collapsed" after the deadline of August 19 passed without the two sides reaching an agreement to extend it amid the resumption of hostilities between Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas.

"The ceasefire has collapsed and Israel is responsible," said Azzam al-Ahmad.

In another development, senior Hamas official Ezzat al-Rishq accused Israel of rekindling the conflict in Gaza, warning that the country would not be safe as long as Palestinians were not safe.

On the same day, the Israeli military said a rocket from the Gaza Strip had reached the Tel Aviv area. This was the deepest rocket attack into Israeli territory since a ceasefire agreement to calm the fighting was reached about 10 days ago.

Hamas's armed wing has admitted firing the rocket, which Israel says fell in an open area and caused no casualties.

Hamas said it fired 40 rockets into Israel, one of them targeting Ben-Gurion airport near Tel Aviv, Israel's main airport.

The move followed Israel's first deadly airstrike since a ceasefire collapsed earlier in the day, killing three people and injuring 40.
