Fans of the blockbuster “Avatar” will have to wait until 2017 to enjoy the sequel.

Following the success of the 2009 film “Avatar,” director James Cameron signed a contract with 20th Century Fox to produce three sequels. Initially, “Avatar 2” was scheduled to be released in December 2016, with the final two parts being released in December 2017 and 2018, respectively. However, the release date was pushed back a year.

The Hollywood Reporter said on January 14 that audiences will have to wait until the end of 2017 to enjoy this blockbuster because the production of part 2 of “Avatar” is much more complicated than the filmmakers expected. Director Cameron also admitted that making 3 parts of “Avatar” at the same time is too “greedy”.

“There are so many complexities that come with making three movies at the same time that we probably wouldn’t have had to deal with making a standalone film,” Cameron said from Wellington, New Zealand, where “Avatar” was shot.

However, director Cameron is also trying to rush to complete the script trilogy this month. Accordingly, these three sequels will still revolve around the two main characters, Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and life on the planet Pandora. In parallel, the design of characters and backgrounds is also in progress.

Collaborating with director Cameron on the three new installments are renowned screenwriters Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno, who wrote the scripts for “War of the Worlds,” “Barbarians” and “Rise of the Apes.”

Jon Landau, the film's producer, also revealed that the film crew has increased many security measures to ensure the secrecy of this film project after the hacker attack on Sony.

Released in December 2009, “Avatar” is the film that opened the 3D film revolution in Hollywood and quickly became the highest-grossing film of all time with 2.78 billion USD, breaking the previous revenue record of “Titanic”, also a film directed by Cameron himself.

The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won three: Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction.
