Classify students for effective review

(Baonghean) - There are still more than 3 months until the national high school exam officially begins, but up to this point, the preparation atmosphere in schools is extremely urgent. The most important step is still to consolidate knowledge and train students in test-taking skills...

Tuong Duong 1 High School (Tuong Duong) has 285 grade 12 students taking the national high school exam this year. However, of these, only 179 students registered for admission to universities and colleges, the remaining 106 students only took the exam to get graduation results. In addition, the number of students registering for elective subjects is also different, the most are students registering for Chemistry and Biology (accounting for about 70%). The number of students taking the Physics exam is only 18 students, 15 students for Geography and the least is History, with only 4 students registering. According to the initial survey, teacher Bui Duc Thien, Principal of the school, said: This is a number that accurately reflects the current learning of the school's students. Students who do not register for universities and colleges are often those with low entrance requirements and average academic performance. They themselves determined that after graduating from high school, they will go to vocational school and find a job that suits their abilities.

Right from the beginning of the second semester, the school has directed subject teachers to properly consider the ability of each student to organize review sessions that are close to the target, ensuring that they can master the knowledge and skills of the program according to the requirements of understanding, knowing and applying. In addition, the school also directed homeroom teachers to proactively coordinate with subject teachers teaching graduation exam subjects to arrange reasonable time, review effectively, and mobilize good students to help weak students grasp basic knowledge and skills according to the requirements of the exam. Currently, in addition to morning classes, the school will organize extra afternoon classes three times a week to review for 12th grade students. At the same time, it is determined to "ensure that all subjects that students register for the graduation exam are reviewed".

The school has also developed a plan to organize concentrated review sessions for students until the end of June, to avoid the situation where students finish the program and go home without taking the graduation exam. Through monitoring the number of students from the beginning of the year until now, the grade 12 students have been attending school more diligently (only 2 students have been absent from school since the first semester), the quality is basically even, so the school is quite confident in this year's exam results. Currently, the Ministry of Education and Training has not yet provided the exam structure, so teachers have many difficulties in orienting appropriate review. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nam, a Literature teacher, shared: “Since the Ministry of Education and Training has a policy to implement a common exam, I have updated information online every day to inform students of any new information. Basically, students have grasped the spirit and reviewed very seriously. Some difficult topics that we have just trained in according to the student capacity development program have also been applied so that students can gradually get used to the new way of learning and the new way of making questions. Hopefully, when giving the exam structure, the Ministry will divide it into specific parts to easily classify students…”.

The biggest change in this year's exam is the GDTX system, because from this exam, students will take the same exam with high school students instead of taking separate exams like in previous graduation exams. Teacher Phan Lam Giang, Director of the Dien Chau District Continuing Education Center, said: Currently, up to 90% of the center's students have determined to take the exam only to get graduation results, so the school has also determined not to review content that is too difficult, but only focus on reviewing the basic program to help students pass the graduation exam. At the same time, increase afternoon classes to tutor students, combine self-study and self-review guidance; combine testing with self-assessment of students, assessment in study groups and testing by subject teachers. In addition, the school also directs teachers to teach all subjects equally, including subjects that do not take the graduation exam (in this exam, the report card score accounts for 50% of the graduation exam results).

Up to this point, according to the Department of Education and Training, in the 2015 national high school exam, the whole province has 32,992 students registered to take the exam. Of these, only about 65% of students will use the national high school exam results to apply for university and college admission, the remaining 35% (11,555 candidates) will take the exam just to get graduation results. One thing that is also very noteworthy is that this year, not only students in mountainous districts do not register for university (Ky Son 66%, Quy Chau 65%, Tuong Duong 54.58%), but in the plain districts, the differentiation of students is also quite clear. For example, in Yen Thanh this year, up to 40% of students registered to take the exam just to get graduation results, Nam Dan is 40%, Cua Lo is 45%, Vinh City is 12%. With this result, it is certain that the organization of separate examination clusters will have to be implemented and according to the plan of the Department of Education and Training, in order to ensure convenience for candidates, the Department is planning to establish 24 separate examination sites in all 21 districts, cities and towns. Some districts with a large number of candidates will establish 2 sites such as Quynh Luu, Nghi Loc, Dien Chau.

Regarding the review work, after the Ministry of Education and Training issued the Regulations and Guidelines on the National High School Exam, the Department of Education and Training sent a professional instruction document to all schools. In particular, it requires principals of high schools to organize for cadres, teachers, staff and grade 12 students to study the Regulations on the National High School Exam and disseminate documents and instructions of the industry. In addition, organize teaching and learning according to the correct and complete curriculum, ensuring standards of knowledge, skills, and orientation for developing students' capacity. Absolutely do not cut the curriculum and teaching content. Strictly implement the Regulations on testing, evaluating and classifying students. Review must be included in the current high school program, focusing mainly on the grade 12 program to help students master the knowledge and skills of the program according to the requirements of knowing, understanding and applying. Instruct students on test-taking skills according to subject characteristics.

Mr. Thai Huy Vinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training, said: Teachers and students do not have to worry too much because the Ministry will soon release sample test questions and test structure to help students know the test structure early. The Ministry's policy is that the test will be differentiated from basic to advanced to classify the level of candidates. The test is in the high school program, mainly grade 12. The test will have 2 groups of questions, one group is equivalent to the high school exam, ensuring that average students can also do the test and graduate; the second group is similar to the classification questions, similar to the university-college exam. The test direction is the same as in 2014 and students can refer to the graduation exam and university-college exam questions from the previous year to review. Regarding review materials, in fact, the Ministry of Education and Training has not released review materials for the national high school exam and there are no regulations requiring teachers and students to use any specific reference materials. It is important that students have a good grasp of the content in textbooks and a firm grasp of the lectures given by their teachers in class.
