On Twitter, President Donald Trump said he and Vice President Mike Pence were closely monitoring the situation. He also announced that Senator Scalise was seriously injured but would recover soon.
Republican Congressman Mo Brooks, who was also reportedly at the scene of the shooting, said Congressman Scalise was shot in the hip and is in stable condition.
Meanwhile, speaking at a press conference, Senator Jeff Flake stated that the shooting occurred at around 6:30 a.m. on June 14 (US time, or 5:30 p.m. on June 14, Hanoi time). According to Mr. Flake, the perpetrator was a middle-aged white man, carrying a rifle, a lot of bullets and had been shooting for about 10 minutes.
Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown confirmed that the suspect was in custody and “was not a threat.” Alexandria schools were placed on temporary lockdown, but classes continued as usual.
Earlier reports said the gunman fired about 50-100 shots during a baseball practice attended by about 15-25 lawmakers. Dozens of other people and security personnel were also present at the scene.
