The ban was imposed after the Paris city government failed to persuade trade unions to postpone a protest against a labor reform bill scheduled for today (June 23).
The government says it has been forced to deploy maximum police forces over the past several weeks to both deal with the high terrorist threat and ensure the safety of EURO 2016. This has made the task of the security forces more difficult, as many troublemakers and vandals have infiltrated recent protests.
However, union leaders immediately protested the ban, calling it unprecedented and demanding an urgent meeting with the French Interior Minister.
