At the IMDEX 2015 maritime defense exhibition in Singapore, French shipbuilder Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie (CMN) has introduced a new missile corvette design with the aim of offering it to Vietnam and Malaysia.
According to IHS Jane's, the new missile boat model named C Sword 90 (Sword) was introduced by CMN at the IMDEX 2015 exhibition in Singapore to market to naval forces operating in coastal waters, especially in the Southeast Asian region.
According to CMN, the C Sword 90 corvette is designed to reach a maximum speed of 28 knots, with a range of 7,000 nautical miles/hour when traveling at a speed of 12 knots. The ship can carry a crew of 65 with 20 beds. The C Sword 90 is equipped with 2 diesel engines and 2 controlled propellers.
The C Sword 90 features an angular fuselage design that minimizes radar cross-section and increases stealth capabilities, with a landing deck at the stern for a helicopter (up to 10 tons) to take off and land. The ship can also carry two inflatable boats with launch booms and has equipment to deploy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs).

The C Sword 90 has a wave-piercing design, super stealth capabilities and is equipped with powerful attack weapon systems, suitable for ground and medium-range combat. |
The C Sword 90's basic armament includes one 57 mm or 76 mm gun, two 20 mm or 30 mm guns, and a 16-tube vertical launch system (VLS) for air defense missiles and eight anti-ship missile launchers.
The C Sword 90 can be optionally equipped with a hydroacoustic sonar station, a towed array sonar and two torpedo launchers (each with three tubes) for anti-submarine warfare.
“The most important feature of the C Sword 90 is that an operator can fit a large amount of equipment onto a compact platform of just 95 m,” CMN’s Civil and Naval Business Director Cherif Rdissi told IHS Jane’s. “The corvette is also designed with a wave-piercing hull to reduce fuel consumption while underway,” Rdissi added.
According to Mr. Rdissi, CMN is aiming to market the C Sword 90 class of warships to two countries, Vietnam and Malaysia. Both countries have made a request for short-range and medium-range corvettes like the C Sword 90. In addition, CMN is also looking at other countries in the Middle East such as Oman.
