The incident happened at 8:15 a.m. in the port city of Marseille, southern France. A car crashed into two bus shelters, killing one person and seriously injuring another, AFP reported, citing police. The driver has been arrested.
The driver, believed to be a 35-year-old man, had previously come to the attention of police for "minor offences". Police advised locals and tourists to avoid the port area.
"We currently have no information about the driver's identity or motive," a police source said.
The incident occurred in the context of Europe recently suffering from a series of terrorist car crashes and stabbings. At least 13 people were killed when a driver deliberately drove a truck into several people on Las Ramblas, a famous street in Barcelona, Spain, on August 17. Not long after, a similar incident occurred in the town of Cambrils, about 100 km from Barcelona, injuring 6 civilians and a police officer. The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for both incidents.
