The reason for the penalty is that in the series of articles "Journey to find the real age of U.19 Vietnam captain Cong Phuong: 19 or 21 years old?" published since November 8, 2014, The thao 24h newspaper published a number of articles with inaccurate information related to the year of birth of football player Nguyen Cong Phuong. This behavior violates the provisions of Point a, Clause 3, Article 8 of Decree No. 159/2013/ND-CP dated November 12, 2013 of the Government regulating administrative sanctions for violations in press and publishing activities.
Not long ago, on December 30, 2014, the Inspectorate of the Ministry of Information and Communications issued Decision No. 1987/QD-XPVPHC to fine Vietnam Television (VTV) 15 million VND for providing false information when making a report on verifying Cong Phuong's real age in a number of programs called Chuyen Dong 24h broadcast on VTV1 in November 2014. The penalty decision also required Vietnam Television to correct the false information according to the provisions of law.
