In 1983, when music video technology was just developing, Thriller was produced for a cost of $500,000, 10 times more than the average music video at that time. But this was a worthwhile investment, because at that time Jackson was an artist who had won many Grammy Awards, and his album of the same name was extremely popular, selling more than 51 million copies and becoming the best-selling album of all time.
Thriller has been voted the most influential pop music video of all time, having a profound impact on popular culture, for which reason in 2009 the Library of Congress inducted the video into the National Film Registry, an honor traditionally reserved for traditional films.
